Shooting Films in Arizona

"The desert, when the sun comes up...I couldn't tell where heaven stopped and the Earth began."
- Forrest Gump

Arizona: The Grand Canyon State. It's a filmmaker's paradise, with a variety of topographical characteristics (including the Grand Canyon), towering trees, bustling cities, Native American reservations, and four distinct seasons each year. Arizona is home to a wide variety of scenery and settings that other states can't match, and increasingly, producers are choosing Arizona as their ideal location for a variety of visual projects. Of course, it's important to be prepared for the unique aspects of visual production work in Arizona before you start framing those breathtaking shots.

The first thing you need to know when shooting in this state is that there is no official Arizona Film Commission. Instead, many of the towns maintain their own film offices, some of which are certified by the Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI). In addition, the National Parks and Native American Nations in Arizona have their own rules, permits and fees for shooting film and video, so be sure to look into those if you wish to use them.

Despite the lack of an Arizona Film Commission, the Arizona Production Association (APA) is quite active (www.azproduction.com). The APA is the non-profit trade organization for Arizona production professionals, and it provides a wealth of information about locations, local permits and industry news. If you're seeking resources for your Arizona-based shoot, the Arizona Production Association is a great place to start.
